Scientists are very interested in the vast diversity of marine life found here. Raja Ampat lies in the heart of the Coral Triangle and is home to the richest tropical coral reef bio-diversity recorded on Earth. The archipelago is host to 1125 species of fish, 700 species of Mollusks, and 543 species of Hard Corals ( 75% of total discovered species in the World). Raja Ampat's near shore habitats include large reefs, sea grass beds, mangrove forests, and karst formations. The high level of bio-diversity within the marine and terrestrial habitats have attracted wildlife expeditions dating back to the 17th Century by the legendary Naturalist Alfred Wallace. More recently, Dr. Gerry Allen, the famous Ichthyologist, author of the classic "Marine fishes of the Tropical Australia and Southern Asia", documented several World records at Cape Kri. In 2003, he published a Preliminary Report combining survey findings in 2001-2002 stating the reefs of Raja Ampat the greatest in the World and that the region deserves the title of being the World's richest bio-diversity area. |
