Komodo region at a glance
The Komodo region is unique due to its
distinct geographical location between two
different marine environments. Its island
group is situated between the island of
Sumbawa and Flores where warmer
Northern water from Flores and Banda Sea
converge with the colder Southern water
from the Indian Ocean. There exist a wide
range  of weather conditions such as wind
exposure, current , and wave action which
all contribute to this rich marine
environment . In addition, the upwelling
caused by the deep ocean currents colliding
with the Continental shelf provides
an endless supply of planktonic food toward
the surface, producing exceptional coral
gardens and attracting abundant marine life.

The diversity ranges from Whale sharks,
Mantas, Eagle rays, Sun fish,Clown
frog fish, Ghost pipe fish, Nudibranches, to
the Blue-ringed Octopus. The large number
and variety of colorful Coral and Sponge,Sea
squirts, and Tunicates provide a paradise
for the macro enthusiast. There is a
estimated 900-1000 fish species marking
Komodo National Park as one of the
World's richest  marine habitats. Dolphins,
Hawksbill turtle, and Green turtle frequent
the park waters, and the Hawksbill turtles nest
in the park. Whales are often spotted during
their migration through the  area.

The Komodo and Rinca Islands are well
known as the indigenous home for the
Komodo Dragon, one of the World's  largest
lizards. The National Park is designated as a
World Heritage site for their protection and
preservation. Nature  walks  can be arranged
from the ranger stations and escorted walks
through both Komodo and Rinca offer a scenic
and memorable experience in the
remote habitat  of Komodo region. Hikers
will also most likely see wild Boar, Buffalo,
Deer, and if lucky, maybe one of few elusive
wild Horses.
