| Banda island group is located within the Central Maluku region. Divers and adventure seekers will appreciate what this charming and remote destination. These islands have shallow waters with steep drop offs deeper than 2000 meters. These vibrant blue waters are stunning and offer the diver and snorkeler alike lots of beautiful and healthy coral gardens and abundant fish life. There is bright colored sponge, large gorgonian sea fans, branching coral, and many varieties of reef fish. Schools of Dolphins are often spotted in this area. The stunning volcano, Gunung Api, rises up 666m from the water bearing the scars from the last eruption in 1988. Hikers find the sunrise view from the crater top is particularly rewarding. During the 17th century, the Maluku region was the sole source of nutmeg and clove production. Many European tall ships sailed here to monopolize and trade the highly prized nutmeg endemic to this area. The Spice Trade Era holds a fascinating history and many remnants of the 17-18th century fortresses, Colonial plantations and residences still stand are well worth a shore visit at Bandaniera, Banda Besar, Run,and Ai. |
