Banda island group is located in the Central
region of  Maluku. During the 16th century, the
Maluku region was the sole source of nutmeg
and clove production in the entire World. When
European adventurers loaded up their tall ships
to seek these spices and demand total
monopolization, this region was changed forever.
The Spice Trade Era holds an fascinating history
here and visitors to this region can still feel the
history come alive as one walks here amongst the
remnants of the 16-18th century fortresses,
Colonial plantations and residences. CurrentIy
in Banda Naira itself, there are more cannons
present along the road then there are cars.
Remote Bandanaira in 1936, served as an exile
for two of Indonesian Nationalist leaders. Their
former exile home/prison is an interesting
museum today. Now days, Banda nests as a
beautifully picturesque paradise quietly resting
from its turbulent past. The stunning Gunung
Api, rises up 666m from the water bearing the
scars from the last eruption in 1988 and hikers
find the sunrise view from the top is particularly
rewarding. In Bandanaira have some shallow
waters which drop off providing the snorkeler
and diver alike with beautiful coral gardens and
rich reef life. Nearby Pulau Ai and Pulau Run
also offer idyllic beaches where the water is
crystal clear and the shallow water drop offs
offer plentiful colorful soft coral gardens
teeming with a wide variety and abundance of
fish. Divers, history buffs, and adventure seekers
will  appreciate what this charming and remote
destination offers.
