East Nusa Tenggara Islands consists of
Lembata,Solor, Adonara, Pantar, and
Alor. They are situated East of Flores Is.
and are still very much on the new
frontier of Indonesian dive and cultural
destinations.
The islands shoreline offer white sandy
beaches and beautiful coral gardens
with rich marine and fish life. Alor is
known for their strong and fast currents
and the enormous fish which inhabit
them. There are caves, overhangs, and
steep walls with prolific coverage of soft
and hard coral, sponge, and dense fish
concentrations of large pelagic and
schooling reef species. Highlights include
Giant groupers, Sharks, Napolean
wrasse,and Great Barracuda.
Alor is one of the least explored islands
and due to its rugged conditions, travel
within its interior is very difficult. These
natural conditions have kept the island's
diverse ethnic tribes extremely isolated,
even from neighboring villages. On this
island alone, there are approximately 50
different tribal ethnicities, each with their
own language and cultural traditions.
The topography of the islands is
mountainous with sculpted hills and
more interestingly as a result, making it
less touched by the outside World. East
Nusa Tenggara Islands are rich with the
variety of ethnic groups forming their
own unique culture, traditions,and
languages. Culture and traditions are
still kept strong today. Most of the native
inhabitants reside and work farms along
the mountain slopes overlooking the
ocean. The shorelines are inhabited by
seafaring ethnic groups from South
Celebes, who make their living from
trading and fishing.
Lembata Is. is known for their
beautiful "ikat" (tie and dye) textiles.
These handwoven textiles are very much
valued as the ethnic heirloom,each
possessing their own unique intricate
designs. On the Southeastern part of the
island, Lamalera village makes their
living from whale hunting. They are one
of two traditional whale hunting villages
still allowed to pursue this custom. Solor
and Adonara Is. are rarely visited by
Western tourists.
